According to Paolo Maldini, AC Milan tried desperately to sign Lionel Messi, the star of Inter Miami and Argentina.

Maldini revealed Milan’s aggressive efforts to sign Messi during an interview with the PoretCast podcast. The former player and technical director put in ten days of nonstop work to achieve this goal. The summer of 2021 was probably the most important time to try to get the Argentine’s signature because of financial difficulties that kept Barcelona from renewing his contract, so the forward chose to sign with Paris Saint-Germain.

Our attempt was to sign Leo Messi. We asked for him, and I wanted him, but after ten days we realised it was just not possible,” Maldini remarked. “A player like Messi is a spectacle for anyone to witness, but it’s too late now. I became afraid when I read that he might even attend Inter.”

Despite failing to sign Messi, Milan went on to win the Scudetto in the 2021–2022 season. Before committing to Inter Miami earlier in 2023, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner lived in Paris for two years.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who will own over 25% of the team, is reorganising the sporting hierarchy at Old Trafford, and as part of that effort, Maldini has been linked to a move to Manchester United.

Messi will take a well-earned break after leading Argentina to another victory over Brazil in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers before playing again for Inter Miami in February 2024.
